The new Range Rover Electric is taking aim at one of the biggest contradictions in the luxury EV market: how do you make an electric SUV feel special without making it difficult to live with?
Range Rover’s answer is surprisingly straightforward. Instead of turning its first fully electric SUV into a futuristic-looking experiment, the company has kept the familiar Range Rover shape, added a powerful electric drivetrain and focused heavily on comfort, range and everyday usability.
That makes the Range Rover Electric an interesting proposition for buyers who want a premium EV but are not ready to give up the size, practicality and all-terrain ability of a traditional luxury SUV.
The model has now opened for bookings in India, although the final Indian price has not yet been announced. It will be brought into the country as a completely built unit, putting it firmly in the premium end of the electric SUV market.
The Range Rover Electric looks familiar for a reason
One of the first things that stands out about the Range Rover Electric is what it does not look like.
There is no dramatic attempt to separate it from the rest of the Range Rover family. The overall proportions remain familiar, with the upright stance, long body and clean surfaces that have become closely associated with the name.
There are, naturally, changes to the exterior. The grille has been redesigned, the wheels and underbody have been optimized for the electric powertrain, and several aerodynamic details help the SUV move through the air more efficiently.
But from a distance, it still looks like a Range Rover.
That could prove important. Luxury buyers are often willing to embrace new technology without necessarily wanting their vehicle to look completely different from everything else in their garage.
Range Rover Electric brings serious performance
The quiet appearance hides a considerably more powerful drivetrain.
The Range Rover Electric uses two electric motors, one at each axle, giving it all-wheel drive. Maximum output is rated at 550PS, while peak torque reaches 850Nm in the appropriate driving mode.
Those figures give the large SUV considerably more performance than its imposing dimensions might suggest.
Range Rover quotes a 0-60mph time of 4.3 seconds. For an SUV designed to prioritize comfort and off-road ability as much as speed, that is a substantial amount of acceleration.
The electric setup also brings another advantage that is less obvious on a specification sheet: precise torque control.
Rather than waiting for an engine and transmission to respond, the system can adjust the amount of torque being sent through the drivetrain extremely quickly. That becomes particularly useful when the vehicle is driving over loose or uneven surfaces.
A big battery is central to its practicality
For a large luxury SUV, range is arguably more important than outright acceleration.
The Range Rover Electric uses a 118.5kWh battery, with the company quoting a maximum WLTP range of up to 372 miles, or approximately 600km.
Range Rover’s Indian website gives an estimated real-world figure of around 535km.
Neither number should be treated as a guarantee of what an individual owner will achieve. Highway speeds, outside temperature, wheel size, terrain, passengers and climate-control use can all have a noticeable effect on an EV’s range.
Still, the battery’s size suggests that Range Rover is targeting buyers who expect their luxury SUV to handle more than short urban journeys.
That is important because large electric SUVs can consume considerable energy simply because of their size and weight. A generous battery provides more flexibility, particularly on longer trips.
Charging shouldn’t be an afterthought
Range Rover has also equipped the electric SUV with an 800-volt electrical architecture.
When connected to an appropriate high-power DC charger, the company says the battery can go from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 22 minutes.
That can make a significant difference during a long journey. A short charging stop becomes considerably easier to fit into a trip than the lengthy waits associated with older EV charging systems.
Range Rover also quotes up to 220km of additional WLTP range from a 10-minute rapid-charging session, provided the required charging conditions are available.
At home, charging is naturally slower. A 22kW AC setup is quoted at less than seven hours for a full charge, while a 7kW charger can take less than 19 hours.
For most owners, that means home charging will likely remain the most convenient option for routine use.
It hasn’t forgotten what a Range Rover is supposed to do
The most interesting aspect of this electric SUV may be its off-road ability.
Range Rover has not treated electrification as a reason to turn its flagship SUV into a road-only vehicle. The Range Rover Electric can wade through water up to 900mm deep and has a maximum towing capacity of 2,500kg.
It also features Terrain Response technology and electric torque management designed to help the SUV maintain traction when conditions become difficult.
Electric motors can be particularly effective in this environment because they can deliver torque very quickly and precisely.
Of course, most owners are unlikely to take an expensive luxury EV into extreme terrain on a regular basis. But the capability matters because it gives the vehicle a broader range of uses.
It can be a school-run SUV on Monday, a highway cruiser on Friday and, at least in theory, a serious off-road machine at the weekend.
The cabin remains focused on comfort
Range Rover has not attempted to turn the interior into a rolling technology demonstration.
Instead, the emphasis remains on the qualities expected from an expensive luxury SUV: comfortable seating, high-quality materials, a quiet cabin and a sense of space.
The electric powertrain should enhance that experience.
Without the mechanical noise and vibration associated with a combustion engine, the cabin can remain particularly quiet at low speeds. At highway speeds, tyre and wind noise naturally become more noticeable, but the lack of engine noise still changes the character of the vehicle.
For passengers, that could be one of the biggest advantages of going electric.
What will the Range Rover Electric cost in India?
This is where potential buyers will have to wait.
JLR has opened bookings for the Range Rover Electric in India, but the company has not yet announced its final Indian price.
In the UK, the model starts at £154,070. Indian pricing cannot simply be converted from that figure because taxes, import duties, equipment and market-specific specifications can substantially affect the final amount.
The India-specification vehicle will be imported as a completely built unit.
That also means buyers should wait for the official specification and pricing before comparing the Range Rover Electric directly with other luxury EVs.
Who will it compete with?
The electric Range Rover enters a market that already includes several high-end electric SUVs.
Models such as the BMW iX, Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV and other premium electric SUVs offer alternatives for buyers focused on luxury, performance and long-distance capability.
The Range Rover has a different selling point, however.
Its appeal is not simply electric performance. It combines the advantages of an EV with the traditional luxury-SUV package: a commanding driving position, substantial cabin space, towing capability and genuine off-road hardware.
That combination could make it particularly appealing to existing Range Rover customers considering their first electric vehicle.
Is it actually practical for everyday use?
That may ultimately be the most important question.
A luxury SUV can have extraordinary performance and technology, but if its range is inconvenient or charging becomes a constant concern, everyday ownership becomes harder.
The Range Rover Electric appears to have been designed with that problem in mind.
Its large battery addresses range concerns, fast charging reduces downtime and the familiar SUV body provides the space and versatility buyers already expect from a Range Rover.
There are still unanswered questions. Real-world efficiency will depend on how the SUV is driven, while Indian buyers will need to consider the availability of suitable charging infrastructure on their regular routes.
The final price will also determine whether its practicality makes financial sense compared with other premium EVs.
