When it comes to outright speed, very few road cars can enter the same conversation as the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport. In 2024, the French hypercar remained one of the most extreme turbocharged production cars available, combining a 1,600-PS W16 engine with a claimed top speed of 440 km/h (273.4 mph).
What makes the Chiron Super Sport interesting is not simply its enormous power figure. Bugatti developed the car around high-speed stability, aerodynamic efficiency and long-distance usability rather than building a machine designed solely for a racetrack.
That combination makes it a very different proposition from many modern hypercars.
The Chiron Super Sport was also part of a closing chapter for Bugatti. The company completed the 500th and final Chiron in 2024, bringing an end to production of a model that had become synonymous with extreme performance.
The Fastest Turbocharged Sports Car Was Built Around a W16
At the heart of the Chiron Super Sport is Bugatti’s familiar 8.0-liter W16, but it was extensively developed for the Super Sport application.
Four larger turbochargers help the engine produce 1,600 PS, while maximum torque reaches 1,600 Nm. The engine can rev to 7,100 rpm, giving the car a substantial power advantage over the standard Chiron.
That power is delivered through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an all-wheel-drive system.
The numbers are staggering. Bugatti quotes a 0-100 km/h time of 2.4 seconds. The car reaches 200 km/h in 5.8 seconds and 300 km/h in 12.1 seconds.
More remarkable is the way the acceleration continues at speeds where most performance cars have already reached their limits.
Bugatti states that the Chiron Super Sport can reach 400 km/h in 28.6 seconds.
Those figures explain why simply describing the car as a fast sports car does not really tell the full story. It was engineered to remain stable and composed while traveling at speeds that are far beyond normal road-car territory.
Why the Chiron Super Sport Can Reach 440 km/h
Getting a car to accelerate quickly is one challenge. Making it stable at more than 400 km/h is another.
Bugatti made substantial aerodynamic changes to the Chiron Super Sport. The rear bodywork was extended to create a longer-tail profile, helping reduce drag at very high speeds.
The front-end design, underbody airflow and rear diffuser were also revised. Every part of the car’s exterior had to work with the others because aerodynamic forces increase dramatically as speed rises.
The suspension was retuned for the Super Sport as well. Stiffer springs and revised electronic chassis control were used to give the car greater composure during high-speed running.
The result is a car that does not rely on horsepower alone to achieve its headline speed.
The 440 km/h figure is the manufacturer’s specified maximum speed for the production Chiron Super Sport. It should not be confused with the 304.773-mph run recorded by the special Chiron Super Sport 300+ during Bugatti’s 2019 high-speed testing.
That distinction is important because the record-setting car and the customer production model were not identical in specification.
Performance Comes With Serious Hardware
A 1,600-PS engine requires more than a powerful transmission and four turbochargers.
The Chiron Super Sport uses an all-wheel-drive system to put its enormous output onto the road. Its chassis electronics continuously manage the car’s behavior, while its braking and tire systems are designed to cope with the demands of a hypercar capable of approaching 440 km/h.
Bugatti also worked on reducing weight where possible. The company used lightweight materials and redesigned components to improve the car’s overall performance without turning it into a stripped-out track special.
That approach is one of the defining characteristics of the Super Sport.
It is brutally quick, but it was still conceived as a grand touring machine.
What About Fuel Economy?
Fuel consumption is obviously not the reason someone buys a Chiron Super Sport.
Bugatti lists combined WLTP fuel consumption at 21.5 liters per 100 km, with official CO2 emissions of 487 g/km.
Those figures put the car firmly into a category where fuel economy takes a back seat to performance.
Actual consumption can vary significantly depending on how the car is driven. Aggressive acceleration and high-speed driving can push fuel use considerably higher than laboratory figures.
Fuel is also only one part of the ownership equation.
A hand-built hypercar with a W16 engine, specialized tires, high-performance brakes and complex electronic systems naturally carries maintenance requirements that are very different from those of an ordinary sports car.
How Much Did the Chiron Super Sport Cost?
The Chiron Super Sport was never intended to compete with mainstream performance cars on price.
Bugatti announced a starting price of €3.2 million net when the model was introduced. Taxes, options and extensive personalization could take the final figure considerably higher.
Availability was equally limited.
The Chiron program was capped at 500 cars, and the Super Sport represented only a portion of that production. By the time the final Chiron was completed in 2024, the opportunity to order a new example had effectively disappeared.
For collectors, that limited production is an important part of the car’s appeal.
Chiron Super Sport vs. Other Hypercars
The Chiron Super Sport occupies an unusual position among modern hypercars.
Cars such as the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut have also been engineered with extreme top-speed ambitions. Other manufacturers have taken a different route, concentrating on hybrid power, rapid acceleration or track performance.
The Bugatti’s approach is different.
The Chiron Super Sport combines enormous straight-line performance with a level of luxury and refinement that is unusual for a vehicle in this performance category.
That is also why the Chiron Super Sport should not simply be compared with lightweight track-focused machines.
Its mission is broader: deliver extraordinary speed while retaining the character of a high-speed grand tourer.
What Buyers Should Know in 2024
For anyone looking at the Chiron Super Sport as a potential collector car, the headline specifications are only part of the story.
Production has ended, so buyers entering the market are dealing with existing cars rather than factory-new allocations.
The car’s rarity, specification, provenance and condition can therefore have a major influence on its value. A highly personalized example may appeal strongly to one collector while being less attractive to another.
Running costs are another consideration. Prospective owners need to budget for specialist servicing, tires, brakes, insurance and other expenses associated with an ultra-high-performance vehicle.
There is also the simple reality of where its performance can be used.
A 440 km/h-capable road car cannot legally or safely demonstrate its full potential on ordinary public roads. Its top-speed capability is primarily a demonstration of engineering rather than something most owners will regularly experience.
The End of an Extraordinary Era
The Chiron Super Sport arrived at a significant point in Bugatti’s history.
The W16 engine had already become one of the defining powertrains of the modern hypercar era, and the Super Sport represented one of its most powerful and fastest applications.
With the final Chiron completed in 2024, the model moved from current production car to modern automotive milestone.
For enthusiasts, that may ultimately be more important than its top-speed number.
The Chiron Super Sport demonstrated just how far conventional internal-combustion engineering could be pushed when cost, complexity and production volume were not treated as the primary limitations.
