The 2021 Mercedes-AMG G63 900 Rocket Edition by Brabus is the kind of G-Class that makes the standard AMG version look almost restrained. Brabus took the G 63 and rebuilt its character around a 4.5-liter twin-turbo V8, 900 horsepower and a production run limited to just 25 vehicles worldwide.
It was introduced in the summer of 2021 as the first G-Class to carry Brabus’ Rocket designation. Rather than treating the project as a cosmetic special edition, Brabus attacked the areas that matter most to a high-performance SUV: the engine, cooling and intake system, exhaust, suspension, brakes, wheels and aerodynamics.
The result is a heavy, upright SUV that can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 3.7 seconds and continue to an electronically limited 280 km/h.
That combination is what makes the Rocket Edition unusual. It doesn’t try to hide the G-Class’s size or its boxy shape. Instead, Brabus built the performance around them.
What makes the 2021 Mercedes-AMG G63 900 Rocket Edition different?
The biggest change is hidden beneath the carbon-fiber hood.
Brabus increased the displacement of the AMG V8 from 3,982 cc to 4,407 cc. The enlarged engine uses forged pistons, specially machined connecting rods and a custom crankshaft. Brabus also fitted its own high-performance turbochargers, upgraded fuel pumps and revised engine-management software.
The finished powertrain develops 662 kW, equivalent to 900 hp, at 6,200 rpm.
Brabus quotes 1,250 Nm of peak torque, although the torque is electronically restricted to 1,050 Nm in the vehicle to protect the drivetrain.
That distinction is worth noting because the headline torque figure doesn’t represent the amount delivered without limitation in normal operation.
The engine sends its output through a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
This is not simply a case of adding more boost to the original engine. The displacement increase and extensive hardware changes show how seriously Brabus approached the conversion.
The numbers are remarkable for a G-Class
The Rocket Edition weighs more than 2.5 tonnes, yet Brabus quotes a 3.7-second 0-100 km/h time.
The top speed is electronically limited to 280 km/h, or approximately 174 mph. Brabus identifies the figures as performance estimates that can vary depending on factors including vehicle equipment, weight and wheel-and-tire configuration.
That caveat matters with a highly customized vehicle like this.
Two Rocket Editions can have different specifications, particularly in terms of exterior equipment, interior finishes and wheel combinations. As a result, published performance figures should be regarded as manufacturer reference figures rather than guaranteed results for every individual car.
Still, the basic message is clear: this is exceptionally quick machinery for something with the footprint and proportions of a G-Class.
A wider body changes the G-Class stance
The engine may be the headline, but the Rocket Edition’s appearance tells almost as much of the story.
Brabus fitted its Widestar body conversion, which gives the SUV a substantially broader stance. Carbon-fiber components are used throughout the exterior, including redesigned aerodynamic elements around the front and rear.
The front fascia gets additional air openings, while the fender extensions visually stretch the G-Class outward. A roof-mounted spoiler and rear diffuser finish the treatment.
Then there are the wheels.
The Rocket Edition uses 24-inch Brabus Monoblock Z forged wheels with carbon Aero-Discs. Tire sizes are 295/30 ZR24 at the front and an enormous 355/25 ZR24 at the rear.
Those dimensions aren’t subtle, and neither is the resulting appearance.
They also reveal something about the intended use of the vehicle. While the G-Class remains an all-wheel-drive SUV with the basic architecture that has made the model famous, the Rocket Edition’s enormous wheels and very low-profile tires are much more naturally suited to fast road driving than difficult terrain.
Brabus changed the suspension too
Adding 900 hp to a tall SUV creates a straightforward engineering problem: the chassis needs to control it.
Brabus addressed that with its RideControl adjustable chassis. The system can lower the G-Class by up to 45 mm, giving the vehicle a lower stance than the standard AMG.
The braking system was upgraded as well, with large ventilated and drilled discs designed to cope with the demands of a vehicle capable of reaching 280 km/h.
The changes don’t transform the fundamental physics of the G-Class. It is still a large and relatively heavy SUV.
What they do is make the Rocket Edition more appropriate for the extraordinary amount of power underneath the hood.
The cabin is closer to a private lounge
Brabus didn’t leave the interior looking like a conventional G 63.
The Rocket Edition receives a bespoke Masterpiece interior with extensive leather, carbon-fiber trim and individually specified details. Buyers could personalize the materials and color combinations, meaning there was considerable scope for one Rocket Edition to look different from another.
The rear seating arrangement is particularly distinctive.
Brabus replaced the usual rear bench with individual rear seats separated by a custom center console. The console can incorporate features such as fold-out tables, while the cabin receives additional bespoke trim and lighting details.
It gives the G-Class a dual personality.
The driver gets access to a 900-hp V8 and a chassis designed around high-speed performance. Rear passengers, meanwhile, are treated to an environment intended to feel more like an executive vehicle than a conventional SUV.
That combination of speed and luxury is central to the Rocket Edition’s appeal.
Fuel economy comes with a predictable compromise
A 900-hp V8 G-Class was never going to be economical.
Brabus lists fuel consumption of 17.1 liters per 100 km in city driving, 12.9 l/100 km on the highway and 14.4 l/100 km combined in its published specifications for the Rocket Edition. The listed combined CO2 figure is 330 g/km.
Actual consumption will depend on driving conditions, traffic, speed, temperature and vehicle specification.
For an owner, fuel is only one part of the equation.
The Rocket’s bespoke engine hardware, specialist suspension, large brakes and 24-inch wheels mean replacement parts and servicing can be considerably more involved than with a conventional SUV. The low-volume nature of the car also makes condition and maintenance history particularly important.
How much did the Rocket Edition cost?
When the model was launched, Brabus listed the 2021 Mercedes-AMG G63 900 Rocket Edition by Brabus at €571,270.21 including German VAT.
That was the manufacturer’s published price at the time and should not be mistaken for today’s used-market value.
With only 25 examples planned, the Rocket Edition sits in a very different market from a normal used G 63. Mileage, condition, specification, documentation and provenance can all have a major effect on what an individual example is worth.
There is also a distinction between the cost of the original conversion and the price of a Rocket Edition changing hands today. A current asking price is determined by the seller and the collector market rather than the original 2021 list price.
Is it better than a standard AMG G 63?
For most buyers, the answer depends on what they want from a G-Class.
The factory Mercedes-AMG G 63 already delivers substantial performance and retains the engineering, support network and everyday usability expected from a production Mercedes-AMG model.
The Brabus is something more specialized.
Its appeal comes from the 900-hp engine, limited production, widebody construction, huge wheels and handcrafted interior. It is aimed at buyers for whom exclusivity and individuality are just as important as acceleration.
It also competes indirectly with vehicles such as the Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT and other ultra-performance luxury SUVs. Those models generally place greater emphasis on road dynamics, while the Brabus retains the distinctive shape and presence of the G-Class.
In other words, the Rocket Edition doesn’t need to be the most agile SUV on the road to justify its existence. Its identity is built around being a radically modified G-Class.
Why the Rocket Edition still stands out
The 2021 Rocket Edition arrived before the current generation of G-Class performance models and represents one of the more extreme interpretations of the W 463A G 63.
Brabus didn’t just increase the output and stop there. It created a complete package around the extra power.
The 4.5-liter V8, 24-inch forged wheels, carbon-fiber bodywork, lowered suspension and bespoke cabin all work toward the same goal.
And then there is scarcity.
Only 25 examples were planned, turning the Rocket Edition into something considerably closer to a collector’s car than an ordinary tuning package.
What should buyers check today?
Anyone considering a Rocket Edition on the used market should look beyond the 900-hp badge.
Service documentation is critical. So is the condition of the modified drivetrain, suspension, brakes, wheels and tires. Buyers should also verify the exact Brabus specification and the vehicle’s provenance.
Because the Rocket Edition was built in such small numbers, originality and documentation can be especially important to future value.
For everyday transportation, a standard G 63 is the more straightforward proposition.
For a collector seeking an exceptionally rare G-Class with serious performance credentials, however, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG G63 900 Rocket Edition by Brabus occupies a much more interesting position.
It is not subtle, inexpensive or particularly concerned with efficiency. Its purpose was different from the beginning: take one of the world’s most recognizable SUVs and create a limited-run machine that feels unlike almost anything else wearing the G-Class shape.
