The Range Rover Sport has never been the sort of SUV that tries to disappear into the background. Even before electrification became a major part of the luxury-car conversation, it stood out for its imposing design, strong performance and ability to venture far beyond ordinary paved roads.

The Range Rover Sport P400e added something different to that formula: the ability to drive using electric power for short journeys while keeping a petrol engine for longer trips.

It Still Feels Like a Range Rover Sport

Land Rover made an interesting decision with the P400e: it didn’t make the hybrid version look dramatically different.

Inside, the emphasis remained on luxury and comfort.

There wasn’t a futuristic cabin designed to remind passengers every few minutes that they were sitting inside a hybrid.

That understated approach arguably helped the P400e. Buyers could choose electrification without having to accept a radically different-looking vehicle.

The compromises were more practical than visual.

The hybrid components affected the available cargo space, so buyers who routinely use their SUV as a giant luggage carrier should inspect the rear storage area before making a decision.

Real-World Fuel Economy Depends on Your Routine

The P400e’s official efficiency figures don’t tell the complete story.

A driver who charges regularly and keeps most daily journeys within the electric range can use considerably less gasoline.

Someone who spends hours on the highway, however, will eventually rely much more heavily on the petrol engine.

That’s an important distinction because a plug-in hybrid’s fuel consumption can vary enormously depending on whether its battery is being used as intended.

The P400e wasn’t a lightweight economy car. It was a large luxury SUV with substantial power and four-wheel drive.

Its efficiency advantage therefore makes the most sense when the owner has frequent opportunities to use its electric capability.

This is one detail used-car shoppers shouldn’t overlook.

A vehicle described online as a 2019 Range Rover Sport P400e isn’t necessarily a U.S.-specification 2019 model.

The P400e was available as a 2019 model in certain international markets, but its U.S. introduction was delayed. American buyers ultimately received the plug-in hybrid as part of the 2020 model-year Range Rover Sport lineup.

That means the word “2019” in an advertisement deserves verification.

Before buying, check the VIN, official model year and original market of the vehicle.

This becomes even more important if an example has been imported, because equipment, certification and specifications can differ between countries.

An inexpensive P400e can be tempting, but the purchase price is only part of the equation.

The Range Rover Sport had a different selling proposition.

Who Is the P400e Actually For?

The best candidate for a used P400e is someone whose driving pattern matches the technology.

If your daily trips are relatively short and you can charge at home, the P400e’s electric capability can still be genuinely useful.

The same applies to buyers who need maximum cargo capacity or want the simplest possible ownership experience.

The P400e is more complicated than a conventional petrol Range Rover Sport. Its appeal comes from what that complexity allows it to do.
