The Porsche 911 Turbo S was already one of the quickest road cars of its era. Manhart decided that was not enough.

Its TR 850, based on the 991.2-generation Porsche 911 Turbo S, takes the familiar 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six and pushes it to a claimed 850 PS and 1,090 Nm. That is a huge step beyond the factory car’s 580 PS and 700 Nm, turning an already serious grand-touring machine into a much more aggressive performance build.

Despite the way it is sometimes described online, this is not officially an “800-hp” Manhart 911. Manhart calls the project the TR 850, with its power figure stated in metric PS. Converted to mechanical horsepower, 850 PS works out to roughly 838 hp.

More importantly, the TR 850 is not simply a Porsche with an ECU tune. Manhart upgraded key hardware around the engine and turbocharging system to support the additional output.

The 991.2 Turbo S arrived with a 3.8-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, two turbochargers and Porsche’s seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.

In standard form, Porsche rated the Turbo S at 580 PS and 700 Nm. Manhart’s conversion raises those numbers to 850 PS and 1,090 Nm.

That means an increase of 270 PS and 390 Nm.

The jump is substantial enough that the engine’s supporting systems become just as important as the software calibration. Manhart’s TR 850 specification includes upgraded turbochargers, an upgraded intercooler and engine software, while the PDK also receives revised software.

The exhaust system can be upgraded as part of the package as well. Manhart lists a stainless-steel exhaust with valve control, while customers could specify either race downpipes without catalytic converters or sport downpipes equipped with 200-cell HJS catalytic converters.

That distinction matters for road use because the race downpipes are not TÜV-approved for normal road registration in Germany.

The standard 991.2 Turbo S was already capable of 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, according to Porsche’s published specifications, with a top speed of 330 km/h for the Turbo S Coupé.

Manhart reported the TR 850 at 2.4 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h and 7.3 seconds from 0 to 200 km/h.

Those are Manhart’s claimed figures rather than independent Porsche factory test results, so they should be treated accordingly. Actual acceleration can change with tire condition, road surface, temperature, fuel and launch conditions.

Still, the numbers demonstrate what the extra power is intended to accomplish.

The enormous torque increase is particularly noteworthy. Going from 700 Nm to 1,090 Nm changes the car’s performance not just at launch but throughout the rev range. The revised turbochargers and calibration are designed to deliver the additional output without relying solely on software changes.

It Still Looks Like a 911 Turbo S

Manhart’s approach to the exterior is considerably less dramatic than its approach to the engine.

The featured TR 850 uses the familiar 911 Turbo S body, supplemented by Manhart graphics and larger aftermarket wheels. The tuner specifies 21-inch Levella LVL1.1 forged wheels, wrapped in 255/30 tires at the front and 335/25 tires at the rear.

The car also receives H&R lowering springs that reduce the ride height by approximately 30 mm.

That combination gives the Porsche a more purposeful stance without transforming its basic silhouette. Anyone familiar with the 991.2 will immediately recognize the underlying Turbo S.

Inside, Manhart offered additional personalization rather than replacing the character of the Porsche cabin altogether.

For some buyers, that understated appearance may be part of the appeal. The car does not need an exotic-looking body to advertise what is happening underneath.

Maintenance records become especially important because the condition of the engine, turbochargers, PDK and cooling system matters considerably more on a heavily modified car.

How Does It Compare With a Standard Turbo S?

The biggest difference is not that the TR 850 makes an already quick car faster. It is the sheer scale of the performance increase.

A standard 991.2 Turbo S was engineered by Porsche as a complete package. Its engine, transmission, chassis, cooling systems and electronics were developed to work together as a production vehicle.

The TR 850 takes that foundation and modifies it substantially.

That makes the Manhart car attractive to enthusiasts who want performance beyond the factory specification, but it also means there are more things to investigate when buying one second-hand.

A standard Turbo S offers the reassurance of a factory configuration. A TR 850 depends much more heavily on the quality of the tuning work and the history of the individual vehicle.

A detailed service history, evidence of proper maintenance and an inspection by a specialist familiar with modified 911s can provide considerably more useful information than a dyno number alone.

The 850-PS 911 Is About More Than a Big Number

The Manhart TR 850 demonstrates how far the 991.2 Turbo S platform can be pushed when an experienced tuner moves beyond a simple software upgrade.

Its claimed 850 PS and 1,090 Nm put it in a very different performance category from the original 580-PS Porsche. Yet the car retains the basic formula that made the Turbo S so effective: a compact flat-six, all-wheel drive, PDK transmission and the everyday usability associated with the 911.

That combination is what makes the TR 850 particularly interesting today.

For buyers, however, the extra performance comes with an extra responsibility. The right example is not necessarily the one with the biggest dyno figure. It is the one with documented modifications, sensible hardware choices, a strong maintenance history and a configuration that is legal where it will be driven.
