Toyota’s answer was not another rugged-looking crossover or a high-performance trim. Instead, it took the efficient Highlander Hybrid and gave it a more distinctive identity.
The result was a three-row SUV with bronze-finished wheels, unique cabin details and a collection of features designed to make everyday driving easier. More importantly, the Bronze Edition kept the Highlander Hybrid’s biggest selling point intact: its ability to carry a family while using considerably less fuel than the conventional gasoline model.
It was a relatively subtle change to the Highlander range, but one that made the hybrid considerably more interesting.
A Different Kind of Highlander
At first glance, the Bronze Edition does not look radically different from other Highlanders. Toyota did not redesign the body or add an oversized collection of aerodynamic parts.
Instead, the company concentrated on details.
The 18-inch wheels received a bronze finish, while bronze accents appeared throughout the interior. The seats combined SofTex trim with fabric inserts and contrasting bronze stitching. Illuminated door sills and specially designed floor and cargo mats added to the theme.
There was also a color that helped the special edition stand apart. Cement was offered exclusively on the Bronze Edition, alongside Wind Chill Pearl and Midnight Black Metallic.
That restrained approach suits the Highlander. It remains recognizable as a family crossover rather than trying to imitate a performance SUV.
Why Toyota Made It Hybrid-Only
The most interesting part of the Bronze Edition is not actually the bronze treatment.
Toyota made the special edition available only with the Highlander Hybrid powertrain. That meant buyers interested in the Bronze Edition were automatically choosing the more efficiency-focused version of the SUV.
The system combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with electric motors and produces 243 horsepower in total. A continuously variable transmission manages power delivery.
It is not a setup intended to make the Highlander feel sporty. The hybrid is at its best when driven smoothly, particularly in urban traffic and during everyday commuting.
Electric assistance can help the SUV move away from a stop with little effort, while the gasoline engine takes over or works with the electric motors as conditions change.
For a vehicle built primarily to transport people, that approach makes sense.
The Fuel-Saving Advantage
The numbers explain why the hybrid powertrain was such an important part of the Bronze Edition’s appeal.
The front-wheel-drive Highlander Hybrid was rated at 36 mpg city, 35 mpg highway and 36 mpg combined for 2022.

The driver’s seat also featured memory functionality and 10-way power adjustment. Puddle lamps, ambient dashboard lighting and other details gave the cabin a more upscale feel without pushing the Highlander into luxury-SUV territory.
That balance was important. The Bronze Edition was intended to feel special, but it still needed to work as a practical family vehicle.
Three Rows Without Giving Up the Hybrid Advantage
One concern with electrified SUVs is whether the battery system compromises passenger or cargo space.
Toyota avoided that problem by placing the Highlander Hybrid’s battery beneath the second-row seating area.

There Is One Important Trade-Off
The Highlander Hybrid is not the right choice for every SUV buyer.
Towing is where the gasoline model has an advantage.
The hybrid’s maximum towing capacity is 3,500 pounds, while the conventional Highlander can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.
That difference could immediately rule out the hybrid for owners who frequently tow larger trailers, boats or campers.
For everyone else, the lower towing limit may never become an issue. A buyer using the SUV primarily for commuting, family trips and everyday transportation may have far more reason to value fuel efficiency.
Safety Remained a Priority
Toyota did not treat the Bronze Edition as merely a styling exercise when it came to safety.
The 2022 Highlander included Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, bringing a range of driver-assistance technologies as standard equipment.
The package included automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assistance, Road Sign Assist and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection.
Toyota also made improvements to the system for the 2022 model year, including additional assistance for certain intersection situations and emergency steering support.
As with any driver-assistance technology, these systems are designed to support the person behind the wheel rather than replace attentive driving.
What It Means for Used Buyers
The Bronze Edition is now primarily a used-SUV proposition, which changes the buying equation.
Its original MSRP was $43,880 for front-wheel drive and $45,480 for all-wheel drive, before applicable delivery, processing and handling charges.
Those figures should not be confused with current used-market values. Today’s asking prices can vary substantially based on mileage, condition, location, maintenance history and vehicle history.
The hybrid warranty is another detail worth checking. Toyota originally provided eight years or 100,000 miles of coverage for covered hybrid-related components, while the hybrid battery received coverage for 10 years or 150,000 miles from the vehicle’s original date of first use, subject to the applicable warranty terms.
Anyone considering a used Bronze Edition should verify the original in-service date and current mileage rather than assuming coverage remains.
A pre-purchase inspection is also a sensible step, especially when comparing vehicles with different service histories.
Was the Bronze Edition a Smart Idea?
In hindsight, the Bronze Edition makes sense because Toyota resisted the temptation to change too much.
The Highlander already had the ingredients buyers wanted: three rows, available AWD, a comfortable cabin and a proven hybrid system. The Bronze Edition simply gave that formula a more individual look and added equipment that could be useful every day.
It also created a clear distinction between buyers who wanted a conventional Highlander and those who wanted the hybrid version with something extra.
The biggest question for today’s buyer is therefore not whether the bronze accents are worth paying for. It is whether the particular vehicle offers the right combination of condition, mileage, history and price.
A special-edition badge cannot make up for neglected maintenance.

For today’s used-SUV shopper, a well-maintained example can offer the best of the Highlander’s traditional strengths while adding the fuel-saving benefits of Toyota’s hybrid technology. The styling may be what catches the eye, but the sensible hybrid formula is what gives this Bronze Edition lasting appeal.
