Toyota had two very different PHEV strategies

Toyota’s 2024 plug-in hybrid lineup demonstrated just how different two vehicles using similar basic technology can be.

That distinction matters to buyers. The Prius Prime is primarily an efficiency-focused hatchback, while the RAV4 Prime offers the practicality of an SUV with performance that would have been unusual for an electrified family vehicle only a few years earlier.

SUVs dominated the mainstream PHEV market

If there was one clear trend among 2024 plug-in hybrids, it was the dominance of SUVs.

Ford’s Escape Plug-In Hybrid offered an electric range of up to 37 miles. Kia and Hyundai had three strong entries between them: the Niro, Sportage and Sorento PHEVs, along with the closely related Tucson Plug-In Hybrid.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV brought another important feature to the segment: three-row seating. Its electric range was rated at about 38 miles, giving it an advantage for buyers looking for a larger family vehicle without moving entirely to an EV.

Jeep approached electrification differently. The Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe used plug-in technology while retaining the brand’s off-road-oriented identity. Their electric ranges were considerably shorter than those of some efficiency-focused PHEVs, but the electric motors added torque and improved low-speed response.

That illustrates an important point about PHEVs: electric range alone does not tell the whole story.

Luxury automakers used PHEVs for power as well as efficiency

Luxury brands turned the plug-in hybrid concept into something considerably more powerful.

BMW offered several PHEVs for 2024, including the 330e, 550e xDrive, 750e xDrive and X5 xDrive50e. The lineup culminated in the XM, a high-performance SUV that used a plug-in hybrid system to produce a level of power far beyond what most buyers associate with fuel-saving technology.

Volvo took a broader approach, offering Recharge plug-in versions of several sedans, wagons and SUVs. Models such as the S60 Recharge, XC60 Recharge and XC90 Recharge combined electric driving capability with strong acceleration and all-wheel-drive configurations.

Lexus also remained in the segment with the NX 450h+ and RX 450h+. These models were positioned as quieter, more efficient alternatives within their respective luxury SUV ranges.

At the extreme end of the market were cars such as the Ferrari 296 GTB and 296 GTS. Their plug-in systems were not primarily about minimizing fuel consumption. Instead, the electric motor was an important part of a performance-focused powertrain producing 819 horsepower.

How far could a 2024 PHEV travel on electricity?

Electric range varied substantially.

The Toyota Prius Prime was among the leaders among mainstream models, with up to 44 miles of EPA-rated electric range. The Toyota RAV4 Prime was rated at about 42 miles, while the Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid reached up to 37 miles.

Several Volvo models also offered electric ranges around or above 40 miles depending on the vehicle and configuration.

Other PHEVs were designed with shorter electric ranges. Performance and luxury models sometimes prioritized acceleration, towing capability, refinement or overall power over maximum battery range.

For an owner who drives 20 to 30 miles a day, even a relatively modest PHEV electric range can cover most commuting without gasoline. For someone regularly driving 50 or 60 miles between charges, the gasoline engine will become much more important.

Charging can make or break the PHEV experience

The biggest ownership question is simple: will the vehicle actually be plugged in?

A plug-in hybrid can deliver its greatest fuel-saving potential when the battery is charged regularly. A driver with a home charger can start most mornings with a full battery and use electric power for short trips.

Someone who rarely charges may see much less benefit. The vehicle still carries an internal-combustion engine and a relatively heavy battery system, so using it like an ordinary hybrid without plugging in does not necessarily make the most sense.

Charging speed also varies by model. Most PHEVs are designed around overnight charging rather than the rapid DC charging capability found in many battery-electric vehicles.

What about price and tax credits?

Pricing ranged enormously in 2024.

Luxury PHEVs make more sense for buyers who want electrification without giving up performance, premium features or long-distance convenience.

The important thing is not to choose based solely on the electric-range number. Consider where the vehicle will be charged, how far you drive each day, how much cargo or passenger space you need and whether you actually want the added complexity of a gasoline engine.
