The 2025 BMW i5 Touring enters the new model year as one of the few premium electric wagons available to buyers, and BMW has already made an important change: the car receives an efficiency-focused drivetrain update that improves its driving range.
The i5 Touring is based on the latest-generation BMW 5 Series Touring and combines the practicality of an estate with the company’s all-electric i5 powertrain. For 2025, the lineup includes the rear-wheel-drive i5 eDrive40 Touring, the all-wheel-drive i5 xDrive40 Touring and the range-topping i5 M60 xDrive Touring.
That makes the i5 Touring unusual in a market increasingly dominated by electric SUVs. It is lower, more car-like and designed for buyers who want cargo capacity without moving into an SUV.
2025 BMW i5 Touring gets more range
The biggest change for the 2025 BMW i5 Touring is not a styling overhaul. BMW has revised the electric drivetrain and power electronics, with efficiency improvements aimed at extracting more usable range from the same basic battery technology.
The eDrive40 Touring produces 340 horsepower and drives the rear wheels. BMW’s updated figures put its WLTP energy consumption at around 18.6 kWh per 100 km, while the exact range depends on equipment and wheel configuration.
The xDrive40, added to the Touring range in late 2024, uses electric motors on both axles to produce 394 horsepower. It reaches 62 mph in 5.5 seconds and has a WLTP range of up to about 323 miles.
At the top of the range is the M60 xDrive Touring. With 601 horsepower, all-wheel drive and up to 820 Nm of torque when its performance functions are activated, it can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds.
The trade-off is efficiency. The M60 consumes more electricity and has a shorter official range than the eDrive40.
Battery, charging and range
The i5 Touring uses an underfloor lithium-ion battery with 81.2 kWh of usable energy. BMW designed the battery installation to avoid sacrificing the wagon’s cargo capacity.
DC fast charging is supported at up to 205 kW. BMW quotes a 10-to-80 percent charging time of roughly 30 minutes under suitable conditions.

The i5 Touring provides 570 litres of luggage capacity with the rear seats in place and up to 1,700 litres when they are folded. The rear seats split 40:20:40, giving owners more flexibility when carrying passengers and longer items together.
Importantly, the battery does not create the usual compromises associated with some electrified wagons. BMW says the cargo volume is the same across the different 5 Series Touring powertrain types.
There is also useful underfloor storage for items including charging equipment. An optional electrically operated tow hitch is available, with towing capacity reaching up to 2,000 kg depending on the model.
That combination makes the i5 Touring more than an electric alternative for commuting. It can function as a conventional family wagon for holidays, shopping and long-distance travel.
Interior and technology
Inside, the i5 Touring follows the latest 5 Series design rather than adopting a dedicated EV cabin.
The dashboard is dominated by BMW’s curved display, combining a 12.3-inch information display with a 14.9-inch central touchscreen. The cabin also features the BMW Interaction Bar, which stretches across the dashboard and provides both controls and ambient lighting effects.
Material choices vary by specification, while BMW offers vegan interior upholstery as well as higher-grade leather options.
As expected from a modern 5 Series, the equipment list can become extensive. Driver-assistance systems, navigation, upgraded audio, comfort features and parking technology are available in different packages and trims.
That flexibility is useful, but it also means the final price can climb quickly once options are added.

Pricing varies by market, so there is no single global figure for the 2025 BMW i5 Touring.
In the UK, BMW lists the i5 eDrive40 Sport Edition Touring from £69,945, while the i5 M60 xDrive Touring starts at £99,995. These are official starting prices and can change with model-year updates, promotions, taxes and optional equipment.
The i5 Touring is primarily a European-market proposition. Availability and exact specifications differ between countries, so buyers should check their local BMW range rather than assume that every version is offered everywhere.
The important point is that this is not a future concept waiting for production. The i5 Touring went on sale in 2024 and continues into the 2025 model year with the expanded drivetrain lineup.
Performance: fast, but the eDrive40 is the rational pick
BMW has not abandoned its performance focus simply because the 5 Series Touring has gone electric.
The eDrive40’s 340 horsepower is enough for a 0-62 mph time of around 6.1 seconds, making it considerably quicker than most conventional family wagons. Its rear-wheel-drive layout also preserves one of the characteristics associated with BMW’s traditional cars.
The xDrive40 provides extra traction and stronger acceleration, while the M60 sits in an entirely different performance category.

Running costs and everyday ownership
Electric propulsion can reduce routine maintenance because there is no combustion engine, oil, exhaust system or conventional multi-speed transmission to service.
That does not make the i5 inexpensive to own. Insurance, tyres, depreciation, financing and electricity costs can have a much larger effect on total ownership costs than routine servicing. Large wheels and the car’s substantial weight can also increase tyre expenses.
Home charging is likely to be the most economical approach for owners with suitable access to it. Drivers relying heavily on public rapid chargers may see a very different energy bill.
As with any EV, battery health and charging habits will also matter over the longer term, although BMW provides battery-related warranty coverage subject to market-specific terms.
How it compares with rivals
The i5 Touring occupies a relatively unusual position.
Its most direct electric-wagon competitors include the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer and Audi A6 Avant e-tron. The Volkswagen generally targets a lower price point, while the Audi offers a particularly strong combination of range, technology and premium positioning.
The Polestar 3 is another alternative for buyers willing to consider an SUV instead of a wagon.
The BMW’s advantage is its combination of traditional executive-car proportions, a genuinely useful cargo area and a broad power range stretching from efficient rear-wheel drive to 601-hp all-wheel drive.
Its main weakness is value. Once heavily optioned, the i5 Touring can become significantly more expensive than some competing electric wagons.

The bigger significance of the i5 Touring is its body style. At a time when manufacturers are concentrating heavily on electric crossovers, BMW has continued with a conventional premium wagon. For buyers who value a low driving position, long-distance comfort and genuine luggage space, that makes the i5 Touring one of the more distinctive EVs in its class.
