The Forgotten Car That Could Outrun Exotic Supercars

Before lightweight engineering became a defining theme of modern performance cars, a tiny American manufacturer built a supercar that quietly challenged some of the biggest names in the business.

The car was the Mosler MT900S, and its reputation rests on a simple but important fact: in period testing, a high-output version was quicker to 60 mph than both the Ferrari Enzo and Porsche Carrera GT.

That sounds almost unbelievable today, especially because Mosler never had the global recognition of Ferrari, Porsche or Lamborghini. Yet the MT900S was a serious mid-engine performance machine, developed around an obsession with keeping weight down.

Its story is less about beating famous supercars in a single acceleration test and more about what happens when a manufacturer prioritizes low mass, a powerful V8 and mechanical simplicity above everything else.

The Mosler MT900S Was Built Differently

The Mosler MT900S was the road-going evolution of the company’s MT900 program. Its architecture followed the philosophy that had defined Warren Mosler’s earlier sports cars: unnecessary weight was the enemy.

The car used a mid-engine layout, rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission. Its construction incorporated a carbon-fiber chassis with tubular steel subframes, while the body was designed with aerodynamics and low mass in mind.

Early production versions used a 5.7-liter LS6-derived V8 producing 435 horsepower. Later cars could be fitted with a 7.0-liter LS7, while one of the best-known test cars used a supercharged 5.7-liter V8 producing 600 horsepower.

That distinction matters.

Not every MT900S had 600 horsepower, so the famous acceleration figures should not be treated as representative of every car built.

How the Forgotten Car Beat Ferrari and Porsche

The most remarkable chapter in the MT900S story came during a Car and Driver test published in 2006.

The 600-hp Mosler managed 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds. For comparison, the Ferrari Enzo recorded 3.3 seconds and the Porsche Carrera GT 3.5 seconds in the publication’s testing.

The Mosler also completed the quarter mile in 11.0 seconds at 135 mph.

Those numbers made the obscure American car an unlikely acceleration benchmark against two of the most celebrated supercars of the era.

The result was not simply about horsepower. The MT900S had a substantial weight advantage over many contemporary exotic cars, allowing its V8 to move considerably less mass.

That formula remains one of the oldest tricks in performance-car engineering: make the car lighter before making the engine bigger.

Lightweight Engineering Was the Real Secret

The MT900S reportedly weighed around 2,200 pounds without fuel in its lighter production specification.

That figure helps put the car’s performance into perspective.

The Ferrari Enzo and Porsche Carrera GT were technological showcases, but both were considerably more substantial machines. The Mosler took a more stripped-back approach.

It had no need to chase the same level of luxury or electronic sophistication.

The steering was manually assisted rather than using power assistance, another decision made with weight reduction in mind. The result was a car that demanded more physical involvement from its driver, particularly at lower speeds.

That could be considered a disadvantage in an everyday supercar.

For an enthusiast, however, it was part of the appeal.

A Supercharged V8 Made the MT900S Even Wilder

One particularly important version of the MT900S used a supercharged 5.7-liter V8 producing 600 bhp and 557 lb-ft of torque.

That engine was paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The combination gave the Mosler a very different character from modern supercars that increasingly rely on dual-clutch transmissions, all-wheel drive and extensive electronic launch systems.

The 2006 test car’s acceleration was strong enough to expose the limitations of its rear-wheel-drive traction. Launching the car aggressively in first gear proved difficult, with the rear tires struggling to put the engine’s output onto the pavement.

Starting the acceleration run in second gear produced the 3.1-second result.

That detail is revealing. The MT900S had enough power to overwhelm its tires rather than needing complicated software to maximize every launch.

The MT900S Was More Than a Straight-Line Car

Acceleration is the headline statistic, but the MT900S was developed with track performance in mind.

The broader MT900 family included competition versions, and the MT900R became part of Mosler’s racing program. That motorsport connection influenced the road car’s basic philosophy.

The MT900S was compact, low and mechanically focused.

Its carbon-fiber-intensive construction helped keep mass down, while the mid-engine layout provided the basic balance expected from a serious sports car.

In period testing, the car also demonstrated strong lateral grip. Car and Driver recorded more than 1.0 g on the skidpad, with the figure improving after suspension adjustments.

That makes the Mosler more interesting than a one-number acceleration curiosity.

It was engineered as a proper performance car.

Why Almost Nobody Remembers It

The biggest obstacle for Mosler was never necessarily the car itself. It was the company behind it.

Ferrari had decades of racing heritage and a global dealer network. Porsche had an enormous engineering reputation and an established customer base. Mosler was a tiny specialist manufacturer attempting to sell an exotic machine at a price that placed it directly against much better-known names.

The MT900S eventually achieved U.S. emissions certification, allowing road-car sales to begin.

But production remained extremely limited. Commonly cited figures put MT900S production at around 20 examples, although exact totals can vary depending on how different versions and stages of production are counted.

That scarcity is now a major part of the car’s identity.

Price, Availability and Ownership Today

When the MT900S was certified for U.S. road use, its announced base price was $189,000.

That was serious money in the mid-2000s and placed it firmly among exotic performance cars.

Today, however, there is no meaningful standard used-car price for the MT900S.

There simply are not enough cars changing hands to establish the kind of consistent market seen with more common Ferraris or Porsches. Condition, specification, provenance and whether a particular car is an early 435-hp example or a more powerful later configuration can have a major effect on its value.

Availability is an even greater issue.

A prospective owner cannot simply visit a conventional exotic-car dealer and choose from several examples. Any purchase is likely to be a specialist collector-car transaction, with parts availability and maintenance expertise deserving careful investigation before money changes hands.

Fuel-economy figures are also not a meaningful reason to consider the MT900S. This was an ultra-low-volume performance car engineered around speed and weight rather than everyday efficiency.

There Was an Even More Extreme Version

The MT900S story did not end with the standard car.

Mosler also developed the MT900S Photon, an especially lightweight variant that used additional exotic materials and competition-focused components.

The Photon incorporated features including carbon-fiber bodywork and seats, magnesium wheels and titanium springs. Its weight was reduced to roughly 1,980 pounds, or about 898 kg.

Only two Photons are documented, making this version dramatically rarer than the already scarce standard MT900S.

It illustrates just how far Mosler was willing to push the company’s lightweight philosophy.

The Forgotten Supercar Still Has a Point to Make

Modern supercars are vastly more powerful and faster than the cars of the mid-2000s. Technology has transformed acceleration, traction, braking and driver assistance.

But the Mosler MT900S remains fascinating because it achieved extraordinary performance without following the conventional supercar formula.

It did not need a famous badge.

It did not need a massive engine.

And it certainly did not need a large production run.

A lightweight chassis, mid-mounted V8 and manual gearbox were enough to produce a 3.1-second 0-60 mph result in period testing quicker than the Ferrari Enzo and Porsche Carrera GT in that specific comparison.

For today’s collector, the MT900S is therefore less interesting as a cheap alternative to an exotic and more interesting as a piece of performance-car history.

Its biggest lesson is also its simplest: when weight is low enough, even an obscure supercar can make very famous machinery look surprisingly ordinary.
